Travelling can be tough on bags. They get shoved in holds and thrown into baggage carts, then squeezed into lockers or stuffed in the back of rental cars. And if youre going on far-flung adventures or serious expeditions, the demands get even greater. What you need is a duffel that can take serious abuse. A duffel like Black Diamonds tried and tested Stonehauler, in fact. Available in four different capacities from 45 to 120 litres, theres a size for you whether you need a roomy weekend bag, a multi-day tripper or a deluxe gear-hauler. All are built from the same tough high-denier fabrics, which also happen to be fully recycled. The side-to-side padded body construction adds a layer of 5mm closed cell foam for added puncture and abrasion resistance, perfect for carrying heavy-duty hardware for climbing, trekking or skiing. They carry just like a backpack too, thanks to removable padded shoulder straps. Meanwhile two interior zipper pockets and one exterior zipper pocket allows you to keep valuables organised, and the mono-mesh ID pocket lets everyone know which bag is yours. And true to Black Diamonds climbing heritage, the exterior of each bag also features a haul-loop carry system, tested to resist 2kN of force. This provides a secure clip-in and carry solution so you know your gear is secure, whether youre hauling it up a big wall or wrestling it off an airport baggage carousel.
The Black Diamond story began with a backyard anvil and a hammer, way back in 1957. The hammer in question was wielded by famous US climber Yvon Chouinard the same man who would also go on to create outdoor brand Patagonia. Chouinard started hand-forging climbing hardware, selling steel pitons from the back of his car in the hallowed Yosemite Valley. Over the years, that fledgling business morphed into Black Diamond, with Chouinard eventually handing over the reins to an equally dedicated group of former employees.
Steeped in mountain heritage, the brand has continued to build on its legacy through innovative, user-driven design, built for demanding adventures on rock, ice and snow. Today, they make a lot more than merely hardware. Which means that Black Diamond isnt just for climbers, mountaineers and skiers their duffel bags, headlamps, lanterns and gloves are all much-loved by hikers, backpackers, campers and global travellers alike.
When it comes to sustainability, the brand also strives to stay true to Chouinards original clean climbing ethos. As a brand, Black Diamond supports environmental not-for-profits, whilst making concerted efforts to use renewable energy and recycle as much waste as possible. But above all, they believe in sustainability through longevity, which means making kit that will stand the toughest test of all: time.
