This soft and squishy duffel bag is the sort of thing you can imagine chucking in the back of a bush plane sometime in the 1960s as you set off to do something seriously intrepid for the National Geographic. Made in tough cotton canvas with a leather base and handles, it’s a handsome piece of kit from the get-go, but it’ll look a whole lot better once it’s had a chance to soak up some red dust and oil stains. Apart from the zipped main compartment, it’s also got stash pockets at each end, a smaller zipped pocket on the side, and a ‘ski strap’ (in the colours of the Norwegian flag, of course) so you can attach dirty boots or other items to the outside of the bag. There’s an adjustable and removable shoulder strap for a more comfortable carry, and the Okavanga comes in two variants a cabin-friendly 35 litres and an expedition-sized 65 litres.
Amundsen clothing is named after one of the greatest explorers ever to walk the Earth. No pressure there then. In fact, the companys co-founder, Jrgen Amundsen, is a relative of the legendary man himself, and the brands designs are based on classic styles from the golden age of exploration. Throw in a generous dash of 1960s Nordic ski resort chic and youve got a unique range of good-looking kit thatll get you noticed in all the right ways.
However, theres nothing old-fashioned about the way Amundsens gear performs. Ruggedly built from merino wool and waterproof triple-layer cotton, these are serious expedition-grade garments built for a Scandi outdoor culture a concept that the Norwegians call friluftsliv, or open-air life. Its the idea that time spent enjoying the freedom of the outdoors should be a core part of your life, since it enhances just about everything else. Now thats something we can all get on board with.
