If you’re anything like us, you’ll have worn (and worn out) your fair share of hiking boots over the years but these Berglers from Hanwag are something really special. Handmade in rugged nubuck and lined with chrome-free leather that’ll mould to your feet with wear, the grippy Vibram soles are joined to the upper with an incredibly strong traditional double-stitched method. Very few bootmakers still use such old-school techniques, partly because there’s no outsourcing this kind of work each boot is 100% handcrafted at the Reck & Sohn factory in southern Germany, and the finished products see daily use in the demanding environments of the nearby Swiss Alps. For an alpine boot, the Berglers are also reasonably flexible, with decent roll-off for comfort on high-mileage yomps. More than a match for huge mountain days and flagship thru-hiking routes, these boots are built to the highest standards for a lifetime of hard use.

  How to measure foot size correctly

  You will need: socks, a sheet of paper, a ruler, and a pen

  Important: Measure both your feet, because most people have one foot that is bigger than the other. Your shoe size is determined using the longest of the two measurements.

  1. Place a sheet of paper on the floor, square against a wall.
  2. Wear the kind of socks that you would usually wear in this type of shoe.
  3. Position yourself on the paper, making sure you are standing upright and that your heel is pressed up against the wall.
  4. Draw a line across the furthermost point of the toes.
  5. Using the ruler, measure the length of your foot according to the paper, from the back of the heel indent to the line across from the longest toe.
  6. Repeat the process for the other foot. Make sure you use the longer of the two measurements for calculating shoe size!
  7. Compare the larger figure you have with those on our size chart to find the correct shoe size for you.

  Important: In our size chart, the extra space you need in front of your toes is already calculated into the millimetre figures.
