Swedish Army M40 Sleeping Bag
This well made bag was first issued in the 40s and 50s to Swedish troops and some also supplied to Norwegian troops.
Well constructed out of thick canvas with a felted padded inner and leather straps to secure once rolled for carrying. There is a compartment on the underside of the sleeping bag which originally would allow the user to place any naturally sourced materials inside for insulation, to cut down the amount of heat loss by conduction on cold ground. Fabric wax will improve water repellency and being canvas is less prone to spark damage from open fires.
Most armies didn’t issue sleeping bags when this was produced as troops tended to rely on woollen uniforms for warmth and a woollen blanket if space allowed in their pack. It wasn’t until 1958 that the UK started to issue sleeping bags.
As this bag is approximately 70 years old, it can’t be compared to the performance of today’s modern materials, but it’s cool as hell and still works as a good spring / summer bag.
