One minute youre slapping on the factor 50 and the next reaching for the waterproof. In our continuing mission to find the best kit for staying outdoors, the Sage Canyon shelter from Big Agnes is just about the most useful gazebo we’ve come across. As well as being a cinch to set up, it delivers 9 square meters of practical protection from both pounding rain and beating sun all while being small and lightweight enough to easily toss in the back of the car. More portable than pretty much any other shelter of it’s size on the market you can also build the perfect combo for your needs by combining it with side walls or a bug-proof insert (each sold separately).

• Big Agnes is a small, independent US outdoor brand out of Steamboat Springs, Colorado a small ski-town that weve never visited but which we like to imagine is full of mountain-loving, trail-hiking outdoorsy types. That would make sense, since the company makes some of the best ultralight backpacking gear around, including the award-winning Copper Spur, Tiger Wall and Fly Creek tents. It is kit that has clearly been designed by a gang of folks who love sleeping in the dirt just as much as we do here at .

  Oh, and if youre still wondering where the heck that name Big Agnes comes from, we did try to find out. Depending on who you talk to, its either an affectionate tribute to a legendary truck drivin mountain mama, or a 12,000 foot peak in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness. We kinda like the first one better.
